QUESTION On a recent tour of the lab, a dentist asked about the possible uses of our laser welder? ANSWER In the removable partial department, the laser welder is critical to the repair and modifications to a partial denture metal framework. Most common, is the repair of framework clasps without the use of solder, which will tarnish over time. We prefer not to laser weld the clasp tips but instead weld at the minor connector for better strength. Also, when the patient loses a tooth distant from the framework's major connector, an additional piece of major connector can be fabricated and welded to the original piece and a replacement tooth can be added. In the orthodontic department, technicians weld different parts of removable appliances. It is commonly used on habit appliances, Wilson appliances, and Ram appliances. Like in partials, it offers a solder-free connection. In crown and bridge, the laser welder is used for implants and long-span bridges. Rather than solder a bridge with a different alloy, the laser welder can use the same metal that was used to cast the bridge and thus obtain a purer and stronger connection.
